A data breach at education software provider Frontline Education exposed personal information of 44,652 current and former Austin Independent School District employees, according to an Oct. 12 posting on the Texas Attorney General's website. The breach affected a third-party software system.

Frontline, which provides administration software to more than 10,000 school districts and organizations nationwide, told Austin ISD about the breach on Aug. 14, the same day it occurred, according to a district letter to staff dated Oct. 22. The district has not explained why it took about two months to tell employees. Frontline began notifying Austin ISD employees on Monday. The exposed data includes names, Social Security numbers, personal and work email addresses, and personal addresses.

Frontline said in a statement that the issue has been resolved. The company said it investigated with an independent cybersecurity firm, fixed the vulnerability, worked with law enforcement and strengthened its systems. It is offering free credit monitoring to affected employees. Austin ISD said it reported the breach to the Texas Department of Information Resources.
