The Maverick County Sheriff's Office is conducting registered sex offender compliance checks across the county ahead of Halloween, Chief of Deputies Roberto De Leon said. Deputies are verifying addresses and making sure registered offenders are following applicable legal requirements during the Halloween season.

Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Authorities expect hundreds of children to go trick-or-treating in Eagle Pass and throughout Maverick County.

The Sheriff's Office encourages parents to learn their neighborhoods and review publicly available registered sex offender information before trick-or-treating. Authorities also recommend planning routes in advance, using well-lit streets, keeping young children with a responsible adult and carrying flashlights. Children should be reminded never to enter a stranger's home or vehicle, and parents should inspect candy before children eat it. The department asks residents to report suspicious activity to law enforcement rather than confront anyone.
