HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest has added a next-generation robotic-assisted surgical system, according to an Oct. 23 release. The hospital says the system is designed to enhance precision, support surgeons and expand access to minimally invasive care for patients in the region.

The release said robotic-assisted surgery lets surgeons perform complex procedures through small incisions instead of larger openings. Depending on the procedure and the patient, minimally invasive surgery may offer less postoperative pain, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to daily activities. The system offers high-definition, three-dimensional views of the surgical area and instruments that respond closely to the surgeon's movements. For certain tasks, it also gives surgeons feedback on how much force is applied to tissue.

Joel North, the hospital's CEO, said the investment is about giving patients access to advanced surgical care in their community. The release said surgeons remain in control of every movement and that the system translates their hand movements into actions using specialized instruments.
