Houston Mayor John Whitmire on Friday directed city police to limit cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal immigration authorities. He signed an executive order to make the change.

Whitmire said the city would focus on immigrants who pose a danger, not on people going about their family business, work and education. He said the order was a result of Democrats taking power in Texas for the first time in decades.

The Associated Press reported that Houston, the nation's fourth-largest city, is one of the first places to act to restrict ICE operations since Tuesday's midterm elections.
