The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is inviting Texans to bring friends and family outdoors for National Hunting and Fishing Day on Sept. 26. The day recognizes hunters and anglers for their work on wildlife and conservation. Gov. Greg Abbott issued a proclamation supporting the day. He said outdoor activities encourage patience, self-reliance and appreciation for nature, and support physical and mental well-being. He also said outdoor recreation generates billions of dollars in economic activity each year.

TPWD Executive Director David Yoskowitz said hunters, anglers and landowners help preserve Texas' natural spaces and wildlife populations. He invited Texans to take a hunter education course or attend a neighborhood fishing event. According to TPWD, hunting and fishing license purchases and taxes on related equipment fund wildlife management programs. Recreational license sales have exceeded $36.7 million since licenses became available Aug. 15.

TPWD said its Neighborhood Fishin' Program is marking 20 years in 2026. The agency said the lakes, found in city and county parks, offer parking, shoreline access and restrooms, and are a good place for beginners. Community Fishing Lakes are also available, and TPWD provides beginner fishing resources on its website.
