Democrat James Talarico defeated Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race on Tuesday night, according to The Texas Tribune. It was Paxton's first electoral loss. The story said polls had projected a Talarico win for months.
Paxton had faced indictments, federal investigations and allegations of infidelity during his career. He had also built a national profile by suing the Biden administration more than 100 times. He portrayed himself as the target of a political witch hunt by Democrats and moderate Republicans.
Paxton challenged longtime U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary. Cornyn had called Paxton's legal troubles an "embarrassment to the party." Paxton won the primary with an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
