The former Texas Death Row inside the historic East Building of the Huntsville Walls Unit has been empty since 1952. The area is off-limits to everyone except the warden. The story says the space once housed Raymond Hamilton, a member of the Bonnie and Clyde gang, and that people tell of cell doors clanging and voices calling out to visitors.

In Huntsville's Powell family plot, a bronze statue of Jesus marks the grave of a 5-year-old boy who died in 1923. Stories say the statue's hands turn from palms up to palms down at night. At Martha Chapel Cemetery, some residents say hands come out of the graves at night to pull the living under.

The story says Huntsville's ghost tales are tied to sites such as the 177-year-old prison, a frontier college hall, a downtown jail and the cemetery where Sam Houston is buried. Postcards Magazine, Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine, the travel site Texas Escapes and The Item have all published collections of the local stories.
