Texas Republicans are blaming one another for their losses in Tuesday's election, according to the report. Outgoing Texas Comptroller Don Huffines said in his concession speech that Gov. Greg Abbott, who appointed him, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick were responsible for his loss and other Republican losses. Abbott and Patrick lost to Democratic challengers, state Reps. Gina Hinojosa and Vikki Goodwin.
Huffines said that people are tired of Republicans holding office and that the party campaigned on lowering property taxes. In a statement, Patrick said he respected how voters decided and accepted the majority will of voters. He cited affordability, gas prices, data centers and 765-kV power lines as issues voters may have considered.
The report said that election data and results suggest aggressive immigration enforcement was among the most significant issues that led Texans to vote Republicans out of power. It also said President Donald Trump, whose average approval rating was below 40%, campaigned with Texas Republicans, including U.S. Senate hopeful Ken Paxton, who lost to Democrat James Talarico. Trump visited Texas four times before the midterms. According to the report, Trump blamed Fox News for the results.
