An elderly woman was flown to a Metroplex hospital after a single-vehicle wreck and car fire between Decatur and Slidell on Saturday night, according to Wise County EMS administrator Randall Preuninger.
Preuninger said the Greenwood/Slidell and Decatur fire departments were called to Farm Road 51, near County Road 2425, at about 9:15 p.m. The woman was the only occupant of the vehicle. He said bystanders pulled her from the vehicle after it caught fire, before emergency responders arrived. The burning vehicle set off a grass fire on the side of the road. Firefighters put out both fires.
She was taken to Medical City Decatur by Wise County EMS Medic 1. She was then flown by AirEvac Life Team 68 to the burn unit at Medical City Plano in critical condition, Preuninger said. Wise County EMS Rescue 1 and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers also responded.
