Día de los Muertos de la Mascota is an observance that honors pets that have died. According to a Mexican tradition, pets are believed to be the first spirits to return, arriving before people.

KPRC 2 reporter Bill Barajas and his wife built an ofrenda, a small altar, for their three dogs that have died: Toby, Sidney and Charlie. The altar includes a bowl of water for the trip, a candle, the dogs' favorite treats and a few toys.

The wider Day of the Dead celebration runs from Nov. 1 through Nov. 2. Families use those days to welcome back the spirits of their human loved ones.
