The Back the Badge 5K is set to return Saturday, Oct. 31, after taking a year off. The run and walk support the Boerne Police Department and are sponsored by the Boerne Police Foundation, a nonprofit that collects donations of money and resources for law enforcement officers and their families. Hundreds of participants are expected, according to the story.

Race-day registration opens at 6:15 a.m. at the Kendall County Fairgrounds, where the race starts and finishes. Opening ceremonies begin at 7 a.m., and the run and walk start after the observance. The course begins on dirt, then continues on the paved Rails for Trails No. 9 Line and into trails at the Cibolo Nature Center. Planners chose the route to offer different surfaces and show off the Hill Country. Leashed dogs and strollers are welcome, but they must yield to runners approaching from behind.

Awards include overall, masters and age-group prizes. Participants receive a Back the Badge T-shirt and a finisher medal. A $10 entry fee will be collected before the start. The event will be held rain or shine. The Police Foundation website said participation, volunteering and donations help support Kendall County law enforcement agencies.
