Virginia Dillard, a 105-year-old East Texas woman, recently cast her ballot in the midterm elections. She also voted in the primaries earlier this year. Dillard, who was born in 1920, said she did not have the right to vote until she was 45.
Dillard said she has never taken her ballot for granted since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. "I enjoy going to vote! It's very important to vote," she said. Her daughter, Vanessa Jackson, said her mother's continued voting is a testament to those who fought for justice. Jackson said there is no excuse not to vote.
Dillard said she was unsure whether she would be allowed to vote, but she was. She said people should respect each other's opinions, which she called the only way to keep talking.
