A federal court granted a continuance for the sentencing of Presidio resident Tiburcio "Butch" Acosta. The hearing was scheduled for October 27 and will now take place on January 19.

Acosta pleaded guilty to felony gun smuggling charges on July 7. Prosecutors said in court documents that Acosta and another man helped smuggle high-powered weapons and ammunition to the La Linea cartel in Ojinaga, Mexico.

Court records show Acosta reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. The agreement is not public. The two smuggling counts can carry fines of up to $250,000 and 10 years in prison. Acosta was initially charged with firearms trafficking, but prosecutors did not pursue that charge under the deal.
