Nonprofit Semillas del Futuro Foundation will host a Día de los Muertos festival Saturday at Spring Lake Park in Texarkana, Texas. Organizers said it is the second local Día de los Muertos festival, and the first sponsored by the group. Foundation president Thalia Rojas and vice president Alaina Hernandez spoke about the event.
The festival runs from noon to 8 p.m. at the park, 4303 N. Park Road. It will include live music, food, a catrina contest, vendors and live dance performances. Rojas said the goal is to keep the tradition alive and to help the wider community learn about the culture, not only Hispanic residents.
Día de los Muertos is a Mexican celebration held Nov. 1 and 2. Families build altars with photos of relatives and sometimes pets who have died, decorated with marigolds, candles and items the loved ones enjoyed. Hernandez said the organizers contacted local law enforcement to help plan for safety at the event.
