The Spearman City Council and Economic Development Corporation are discussing a possible food truck park. House Bill 2844, the state's new food truck law, has also become part of the conversation.
The law replaces local health permits for mobile food vendors with one statewide permit issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services, according to the report. Food trucks must still be inspected and meet state food safety standards. The law does not change a city's authority over zoning, land use, parking, utilities or public property. The report said Spearman has never required local food truck health permits.
In an online poll conducted by the Hansford County Reporter-Statesman, 81 percent of respondents supported creating a food truck park, and 19 percent opposed it. The report said food trucks still collect sales tax, which the Texas Comptroller collects and distributes to local taxing entities.
