The shooting began shortly after 10 p.m. Oct. 20 in the 4300 block of State Highway 198. Van Zandt County deputies were helping Canton police serve felony warrants on a wanted suspect when, around 10:22 p.m., officers at the scene reported gunfire coming from inside the residence, according to the story.
Deputy Adam Sherifi was fatally wounded in the exchange. Canton police Officer Chris Watson was shot in the upper arm, underwent surgery at a hospital and was released Oct. 24. Canton police said he faces a long recovery. The department thanked staff at Medical City Plano for their care.
Sherifi leaves a wife and three children. On Oct. 26, a procession carried his body from Dallas to Canton, and residents, officers and first responders lined the route. He was laid to rest Oct. 28. Law enforcement officials said earlier this week that the investigation remains open.
