Thousands of people dressed in pink gathered at Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas on Saturday morning for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. The 5K walk brought together survivors, caregivers, families and supporters to raise money and awareness.
NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 sponsored the event. NBC 5 reporter Alanna Quillen emceed the walk and spoke about her mother's experience with breast cancer. The event marked the 16th year of the North Texas walk.
Money raised through Making Strides supports cancer research, education, prevention and support for patients and caregivers, according to the American Cancer Society. The society said it has worked for more than 110 years to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families, and that the death rate from breast cancer has fallen 42% since 1989. Organizers said the walk also gives people across the community a way to show solidarity with patients and caregivers.
