The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is asking Texans to take extra precautions this Halloween. The agency says steps such as choosing safe costumes, staying visible while trick-or-treating, staying alert behind the wheel and watching for pedestrians can help prevent accidents.

Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee said drivers should stay focused, slow down and watch closely for children and pedestrians. He said people who are drinking should plan a sober ride home.

Citing the non-profit Safe Kids Worldwide, DPS said children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other night of the year.
