Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday, ending his bid for a record fourth term. The story said no Democrat has served as Texas governor this century.
In her victory speech before 11 p.m., Hinojosa said, "We did it. Everything is bigger, including the shock of this win. We shocked the world tonight." The story said supporters could be heard sobbing in the room.
Hinojosa said she was not bothered that people doubted her, but that they doubted "us." She referred to attack ads and said Texas voters had kept her faith.
