Members of Cub Scout Pack 107 in Nacogdoches have spent weeks collecting non-perishable food for veterans in need. The drive is run with Hunger Free Nac Sin Hambre, a new nonprofit that works on food insecurity across Nacogdoches County. The story cites Feeding America data showing one in nine working-age veterans is food insecure.

Scouts collected canned goods around the community and handed out flyers and blue collection bags while trick-or-treating on Halloween. Residents were asked to leave filled bags on their porches for pickup Saturday morning, before the Veterans Day parade. Den leader Susan Stoner said the drive gives the young Scouts a way to say thank you to veterans.

Scout Augustus Snellings said helping others is part of being a stable community. Troop members will also carry the American flag in Saturday's parade. Anyone who wants to donate can bring non-perishable food to the Hunger Free Nac table at First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches. Donations must be dropped off by 10 a.m. Saturday.
