The Marshall Education Foundation awarded more than $86,000 in grants to Marshall ISD campuses during its Grant Giveaway Day, according to board President Christy Godwin. The nonprofit was created in 2011 to support education initiatives in the district. Teachers and staff can apply for funding for supplemental programs and materials.
Godwin said 59 teachers, grade-level teams, campus administrators and other staff received grants, and many received funding for more than one project. She said $35,395 will benefit entire grade levels and $36,687 will benefit entire campuses. She added that 84% of the funds will have an impact beyond a single classroom.
Funded projects include a hands-on DNA science program, a mobile lab cart and a mobile school health cart. Price T. Young's Fine Arts Academy received funding to buy more pianos because its piano class has grown. The Care on the Move project is a mobile health cart that lets a nurse bring care to students instead of students missing class time.
Grant applications open during convocation at the start of the school year and close in September. Godwin said applicants describe what they need funding for, who it will serve, the materials needed and the cost.
