Weslaco leaders, economic development officials and workforce partners gathered at Weslaco City Hall to present $117,000 for healthcare training for local residents. The funding includes a $58,500 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission's High Demand Job Training program. The Weslaco Economic Development Corporation matched it with another $58,500.

Through a partnership among the Weslaco EDC, Workforce Solutions Lower Rio Grande Valley and Texas Southmost College, 25 eligible Weslaco residents will receive full tuition and fee coverage for Patient Care Technician training. Hands-on clinical training will be held locally at Knapp Medical Center.

Weslaco Mayor Adrian Gonzalez said the program begins at home and is designed for Weslaco residents. "Investing in our people is an investment in Weslaco's future," he said.

Steve Valdez, executive director of the Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco, said direct job creation and workforce training are the core mission of the agency. Sandra Charlton, board president of the Weslaco EDC, said each partner has a role in the effort and thanked Knapp Medical Center for its part.
