Carl Alan Atnip, 48, was arrested and charged with 12 counts of possession of child pornography, the term used in Texas law for child sexual abuse material. The charges are third-degree felonies that date back to 2023.
Atnip taught special education at Highlands High School in the San Antonio Independent School District from October 2021 to August 2023, according to a report by the San Antonio Express-News. The San Antonio Police Department said an officer found an outstanding warrant for Atnip during a traffic stop on October 28. He was booked into the Bexar County Jail, where bond was set at $50,000.
Atnip has held a special education teaching certificate since 2011. The Texas Education Agency is reviewing that certification. The agency is also investigating thousands of educator sexual misconduct complaints, and hundreds of Texas educators have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children in recent years, the report said.
