Houston residents signed up for emergency alerts at record rates during the 2026 hurricane season, the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management said. The area was not hit by a major hurricane this season.
Registrations for AlertHouston climbed to nearly four times the typical monthly average after June 1, the start of hurricane season. September was the highest month, with sign-ups 420% above the normal monthly average. The office also reported a notable increase in registrations for the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR). The program helps emergency planners identify residents who may need extra help during a disaster, including some older adults and people with disabilities.
Brian Mason, director of the Houston Office of Emergency Management, said the numbers reflect years of community outreach. "Preparedness is about taking action before an emergency happens," Mason said. He encouraged residents to stay informed, make a plan and take steps now.
