Fort Worth hip-hop artist Benny Smoke has released a new single, "Wobble," and is preparing an EP and a debut album. Smoke, 38, said he played local venues such as Lola's Saloon and the Granada Theater around 2009, and that he has overcome an alcohol addiction. The song uses a heavy, old-school beat from the 1990s.
Smoke said he grew up on the South Side of Fort Worth, surrounded by drug dealing, gangs, graffiti and other aspiring rappers. He said "Wobble" is meant to encourage listeners who want change in the world. He recorded, mixed and mastered the track at his home studio, and said he made it entirely on his phone. The song was produced by Rice Master Yen, who is from Germany.
Smoke said he has released nine singles and four EPs over the past couple of years. He named Erykah Badu, Wiz Khalifa and Larry June among his influences. He said all proceeds from his upcoming show at Haltom Theater will go to the family of Derek Jones, a close friend who recently died.
