A mural is taking shape on the Dumas Animal Shelter on S. Maddox. Teacher and coach Raphael McHenry came up with the idea after seeing the animal shelter in Orange, Texas. He asked art teacher Selenda Hightower and the art club to take part. McHenry said the shelter received approval from the city, and DHS Principal Carl Clements approved students being pulled from class.

Hightower and art teacher Raquel Aguillon said the design was inspired by a photo of the Orange Animal Shelter. They said they wanted a similar style, but not an identical one. Last Friday, artists worked on the front of the building. Some painted the lower section, while others painted blue sky, clouds and tall trees from ladders. Others handled supplies.

Hightower and Aguillon said the crew included 13 students, two teachers, a parent and many donors of paint and money. Two businesses donated breakfast and lunch. They estimated two more days of work are needed to finish the east and north walls.
