North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose National Player of the Week. Cindy Smoak, executive director of SPORTyler and the award, announced the honor on Tuesday for the ninth week of the college football season. Jackson had been an honorable mention twice before this season.
Jackson completed 33 of 46 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns, and he rushed for 41 yards, in the Mean Green's 48-41 win over Florida Atlantic. The release said Jackson has five 300-yard passing games this season and two games with more than 400 passing yards. It also said he had no 300-yard passing games in his career before this season. Jackson ranks among the nation's best in several offensive categories, including total offense and passing yards, both third, according to the award.
Jackson, a graduate of Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana, previously played at UCF, Indiana and Tennessee before transferring to North Texas. The Mean Green (6-2, 4-0) play Rice (1-7, 0-4) in an American Conference game Saturday in Denton. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at DATCU Stadium and will be shown on ESPNU.
