Texas Standard is running a series this month on horror movies with ties to Texas, produced with the magazine Fangoria. The series includes an film made in El Paso and a version of Camp Crystal Lake that was filmed in Texas, according to the report.
Jason Kauzlarich, Fangoria's creative director, told Texas Standard that the magazine began in 1979 as a spinoff of the sci-fi magazine Starlog. He said Fangoria set itself apart by covering how horror films were made, especially makeup and creature effects. He said the brand grew as horror's audience grew, and that the magazine is planning new projects for 2027.
Kauzlarich said horror became much more mainstream after the 1980s, when Fangoria featured the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series on its cover. He said younger audiences are now going to theaters and buying physical media, not only watching horror films at home on streaming.
