On Thursday, the Bryan ISD Education Foundation awarded 55 grants to teachers as part of a program called Grant Patrol. The grants total $150,000. The day began at Rayburn Intermediate School, and the foundation then made stops at nearly every school in the district.
Rayburn Intermediate School Principal Whitney Foreman said Grant Patrol Day is a highlight of the school year. Teacher Grants Committee Chair Leah Vernon said the grants let educators bring new and innovative ideas into their classrooms. Vernon said the foundation raises money to help where the district budget falls short.
Teachers apply for the grants through an anonymous online process that opened when the school year started. Fifth grade science teacher Nick May received more than $2,400. He said he plans to use the money for rare earth metals for lessons on matter and chemical reactions, and for model rocket supplies to teach forces in motion.
Foundation leaders said the money comes largely from the Hometown Reunion, the foundation's biggest annual fundraiser. Community donors and local sponsors also contribute.
