A bat found alive in Cedar Park on Tuesday has tested positive for rabies, according to the Cedar Park Police Department. The bat was found near 1430 Main Street. Police said it is not known whether any people or pets came into contact with it.

Officials said rabies is fatal once symptoms appear, but prompt treatment after exposure can prevent infection. Police said anyone who may have had contact with the bat should contact a health care provider immediately. Pet owners who think their animals may have been exposed should contact a veterinarian. Possible exposures can also be reported to Cedar Park Animal Control at 512-260-4622.

Officials reminded residents never to touch or handle bats or other wild animals and to keep pets vaccinated against rabies.
