St. Matthew Catholic School has raised $1.2 million to build a new gymnasium, according to parish member Chris Anchondo, an El Paso attorney. Groundbreaking is expected in several weeks, and the school plans to finish the building before the next school year begins.

Anchondo said the Diocese of El Paso has approved the project. Contracts have been signed with Banes Construction, and plans are being submitted to the city for approval. Anchondo, David Leeper and Marie Zaiz donated the money needed for construction.

The project started two years ago, when Principal Veronica De La Cruz approached Anchondo with a plan for a gym serving the school's elementary and middle school students. Anchondo credited De La Cruz's dedication and determination for moving the project forward. He also thanked Father Lopez, the parish priest, and Bishop Mark Seitz. The gym is designed for athletics and school activities and as a gathering place for the parish community.
