The North East Independent School District Police Department has fired two sergeants and suspended three officers for their responses to a threat against Serna Elementary School at the end of August, a district spokesperson confirmed. Sgt. Moses Suarez and Sgt. Rey Bermea were terminated. Sgt. George Teniente, Det. Leticia Sanchez and Officer Michael Luna were each suspended for three days. The district said the officers were disciplined for their roles in how they handled the threat but gave no further details.
Nathaniel Michael Carrasco, 22, of Northeast San Antonio, has been charged with making a terroristic threat, a third-degree felony. According to a police affidavit, Carrasco submitted queries to an Anthropic AI chatbot that included threats to shoot students at Serna Elementary, which is across the street from his home. The affidavit says the threat was made on Aug. 11, days before the school year started.
The FBI reported the queries to the Southwest Texas Fusion Center on Aug. 28, according to the affidavit, and the FBI tentatively identified Carrasco as the person who made the threat. A San Antonio Police Department detective then obtained emergency information from T-Mobile, Charter Communications and Google, which the affidavit says tied Carrasco to the queries. San Antonio police arrested Carrasco on Aug. 30. He was booked into the Bexar County jail on $250,000 bail. The affidavit does not explain the time between the FBI report and the arrest. Carrasco is scheduled for a pre-indictment hearing on Dec. 15 before Judge Miguel Najera.
