Texas Comptroller Don Huffines is a leader of Huffines Enterprises Science & Technology, known as HEST, a Dallas-based private equity firm. According to the firm's website, HEST invests in SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk. Huffines did not list this role on the personal financial disclosure form he filed in February, according to the report. State law requires candidates and officials to report executive roles in businesses they hold.
The comptroller's office, which Huffines has led since July while he runs for a full term, administers two tax breaks worth more than $1 billion to SpaceX and an affiliate. Those breaks were awarded before Huffines took office.
A state filing signed in September lists Huffines as manager of HEST, according to records from the comptroller's office. His son, Colin Huffines, is also listed as manager. An archived version of the firm's website from early February listed Huffines as president, and listed another son, Russell Huffines, as vice president. The page has been offline since at least March. A spokesperson for Huffines' campaign did not respond to questions about whether he is still president.
