Galveston police arrested City Council member Jason Hardcastle on Friday evening after a two-car crash on Seawall Boulevard, according to a police news release. Officers responded to the crash around 8:15 p.m. No injuries were reported. An officer noticed signs of possible intoxication, police said.
Hardcastle was charged with driving while intoxicated, a Class B misdemeanor, and resisting arrest, search or transportation, a Class A misdemeanor. Officials said he refused to provide a breath sample, so officers served a search warrant for a blood specimen. Police said that while the warrant was being carried out at a local hospital, Hardcastle physically resisted officers. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Hardcastle was booked into the Galveston County Jail on a combined bond of $2,500. Officials confirmed he was no longer in the jail as of Monday morning. His attorney, Jonathan Zendeh Del, said in a statement that preliminary review indicates wet roadway conditions may have played a significant role in the crash. Hardcastle represents District 6, the western part of Galveston Island, and his term expires in 2028.
