Liberty County voters have cast about 19,443 ballots so far, according to County Clerk Lee Chambers. That total includes 19,014 in-person early votes and 429 mail-in ballots received as of Thursday, Oct. 29. With just over 60,000 registered voters, that is roughly 32 percent.
Chambers said she hopes turnout reaches 45 percent, or about 27,000 voters. She estimated the county could finish with between 25,000 and 28,000 votes, but said weather expected Tuesday, Nov. 3, could affect how many people reach the polls. Election workers were delivering equipment and setting up locations on Monday, Nov. 2, she said.
Chambers said she was pleased with the early turnout, even though no county judge, county clerk or justice of the peace races are contested. Voters will decide several statewide and state races, along with one contested race for the Tarkington ISD Board of Trustees. Two special elections are also on the ballot, including one in the City of Liberty over the Liberty Community Development Corporation sales tax and one in the Hull Fresh Water Supply District over an operations and maintenance property tax.
