A man accused of shooting and killing 75-year-old Maria Glorida Liceaga inside Westover Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on Nov. 1 is facing charges, according to a San Antonio Police report. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office identified Liceaga. Manuel Becerril Espinoza is accused of killing her. She shared a room with his mother at the facility.
According to the report, a nurse heard people arguing in Spanish inside the room shortly before a loud bang. Another nurse told investigators that the two women had earlier disagreed about the room's temperature, but she said those disagreements had been resolved. The report does not say whether the argument had any link to the shooting. Staff applied pressure to Liceaga's wound until emergency crews arrived. She was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.
Nurses told investigators they saw Espinoza pushing his mother in a wheelchair toward the front of the building. A nurse said he replied, "Nothing happened, nothing happened," when she asked whether everything was OK. Police reported finding a handgun and body armor on Espinoza after his arrest. He told investigators his gun went off while he was walking to a store, but investigators said surveillance video showed him wearing the same clothing seen after the gunshot. Espinoza's mother gave investigators a different account of what happened.
