East Texas Baptist University's men's soccer team beat McMurry University 5-1 on Tuesday night in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. The game was played at Pirate Stadium in Longview after being moved because of field conditions. ETBU scored four goals in the first half and one after halftime. The Tigers, who finished the season 9-6-3, had 19 shots and 11 on goal. McMurry, 1-15-1, had two shots on goal.
Five ETBU players scored: Dylan Garcia, Braxton Ladwig, Andrew Bradford, Jordy Rocha and Dawson Lopez. The team said the win is its second postseason victory in program history and its first since 2018. Head coach Chris Crawford said the team is moving the ball well and playing to its speed. "We are starting to execute well and this team is getting better each game," Crawford said.
Garcia said the team had a tough season but was excited about the win and advancing to the next round. "We have worked hard as a group and I think it shows on the scoreboard," he said.
