Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa is scheduled to hold her first press conference since Texas voters elected her and other Democrats to statewide office. The event is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, and she is expected to take questions and discuss next steps for her administration.
Democrats won statewide offices and took the Texas House, which the Texas Tribune said gives them more power than expected. Republicans will still hold a majority in the state Senate. Democrat Vikki Goodwin will serve as lieutenant governor, and Democrat Nathan Johnson is set to take over the attorney general's office. Outgoing Republican Gov. Greg Abbott lost his reelection bid on Tuesday. Hinojosa said her talks with Abbott were a good start.
On the campaign trail, Hinojosa promised to give every Texas household $1,500 from the state savings account, end public school takeovers, roll back Abbott's private school voucher program, expand Medicaid, and cut "waste, fraud and abuse" from government.
